WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna (FL-13) introduced a resolution recognizing the importance of National Safe Boating Week. The bipartisan resolution emphasizes the critical need for safe boating practices and the significant impact of boating safety education and preparation on reducing fatalities and accidents on American waters.

“We have not given National Safe Boating Week the attention and respect it deserves,” said Congresswoman Luna. “Boating is a cherished activity for over 100 million Americans, and we must raise awareness about doing it safely. As Floridians especially, we love any opportunity to be on the water. My resolution highlights critical, life-saving tips for recreational boaters so everyone can enjoy a safe, fun boating experience.”

The resolution emphasizes the importance of life jackets, referencing Coast Guard estimates that nearly 83% of boating fatalities could be prevented. On average, 650 people die every year in boating-related accidents in the United States, with 75% of these fatalities caused by drowning. Many of these tragic deaths could have been prevented if the individuals involved had been wearing their life jackets.

Congresswoman Luna’s commitment to boating safety is underscored by the support of her original co-sponsors: Representatives Randy Weber (TX-14), Jeff Van Drew (NJ-02), Russell Fry (SC-07), Chris Smith (NJ-04), and Don Davis (NC-01).

“Ensuring the safety of our families and friends while on the water is not just a priority, it’s a responsibility,” said Congressman Weber. “We offer this resolution to remind boaters to practice safe boating and to have fun. After all, we want to enjoy the waves, not make them!”

“With more than 2,800 miles of tidal coastline and nearly 370,000 acres of lakes, generations of South Carolinians have enjoyed boating in the Palmetto State,” said Congressman Fry. “I’m proud to join Congresswoman Luna to recognize the importance of boating safety so folks can continue to stay safe while out on the water.”

“As millions of Americans begin to head to the water this summer to relax and enjoy, it is important that we promote and emphasize responsible boating practices,” said Congressman Van Drew. “National Safe Boating Week serves as a reminder of the safety measures we can adopt to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment nationwide, allowing everyone to appreciate America’s beautiful waterways with confidence and peace of mind.”
