Luna Introduces Resolution to Empower President Trump to Maintain Federal Control of D.C. Police
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna announced a resolution to grant President Donald J. Trump the authority to maintain federal control of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of the District of Columbia for as long as he deems necessary to restore law and order.
Under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973, the District was granted limited self-governance while remaining under ultimate Congressional oversight. This Act permits the President to intervene in D.C. affairs during emergencies, including assuming control of local law enforcement. However, current law restricts federal control to 30 days without direct Congressional authorization to extend it.
Earlier this week, President Trump invoked this authority to federalize the MPD and deploy the National Guard to address the escalating crime and lawlessness plaguing the nation’s capital. Without Congressional action, that control will expire after 30 days— regardless of whether the mission is complete.
“Our resolution is straightforward: if the President determines that continued federal control is necessary to keep D.C. safe, he should have the authority to do so,” said Congresswoman Luna. “This is about restoring safety, enforcing the law, and cleaning up the streets of our capital city. We should not tie the President’s hands when the stakes are this high.”
The resolution would ensure that President Trump can maintain direct oversight of the MPD until he determines the mission is complete, without being forced to relinquish control due to arbitrary time limits. Supporters say this measure is critical to ensuring lasting public safety reforms and ending the revolving door of crime in D.C.
